Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that an agreement has been reached with Qatar regarding major strategic investments in large construction projects across Canada. He shared this news at a press conference in Doha.
According to the head of government, the capital attracted will help speed up project implementation, stimulate the development of energy sectors, and create new jobs for Canadians.
A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations
Describing the agreement as a "new chapter" in relations between the two countries, Carney highlighted plans to strengthen cultural ties. Specifically, there are plans to increase the number of direct flights between Canada and Qatar to boost tourism and business connections.
"When people from different countries are familiar with each other's cultures and perspectives, they become enriched and trust each other more," he said. "And they also want to do more together, build together."
Finalizing the Investment Agreement
The Prime Minister stated his intention to finalize the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by the summer of this year. Negotiations on this document have been ongoing for several years but remained incomplete until now. There are also plans to station a Canadian military attaché in Doha to deepen cooperation in the defense sector.
Meeting with the Emir of Qatar
On Sunday, Carney participated in an official welcome ceremony and held a meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Canadian Prime Minister invited the Emir to visit Canada this year.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, the leaders discussed prospects for developing relations between the two countries and agreed to maintain regular contact.
The welcome ceremony took place near the Amiri Diwan — the center of the Qatari government. The event featured traditional honors: a group of men on camels and armed horsemen wearing bandoliers lined up along the Prime Minister's motorcade route.
Carney was accompanied by a group of Canadian ministers, including Mélanie Joly, Anita Anand, and François-Philippe Champagne. During the ceremony, an orchestra performed the national anthems of both countries.

The Canadian Prime Minister's visit to Qatar aims to develop trade and partnerships in areas such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy, and defense.
The trip to Doha followed Carney's visit, along with several cabinet ministers, to Beijing, where they met with leading political and business leaders in China to strengthen trade and bilateral ties.
These initiatives are part of a broader campaign by the Liberal government to attract new investments and expand trade relationships beyond Canada's traditional partners, such as the United States.
Carney's nine-day foreign trip will conclude with participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
