Inflation in Canada slowed down due to unexpected factors

Inflation in Canada slowed down due to unexpected factors

Fuel and food prices showed significant declines, but one service sector came as a surprise.

Statistics Canada released inflation data for October, which came in at 2.2 percent year-over-year. This represents a decrease of 0.2 percentage points compared to September's figure of 2.4 percent.

The main factors behind the slower price growth were cheaper fuel and food. October's inflation numbers came in one point higher than economists' forecasts.

Lower Fuel and Food Prices

Gas prices fell more quickly in October compared to the previous month. The agency attributes this to fuel retailers switching to cheaper winter fuel blends.

The food sector showed even more impressive movement — food prices dropped 0.6 percent over the month. This monthly decline in grocery store prices was the largest in more than five years.

The annual rate of food price increases also slowed in October. Despite a significant increase in chicken prices, the overall picture improved due to lower costs for prepared foods and fresh vegetables.

Rising Communication Service Prices

A limiting factor preventing a more significant drop in inflation was a rare increase in cell phone service costs. According to StatCan, prices in this segment rose 7.7 percent over the month, marking the first increase since April 2023.
