More than 800 kilograms of contraband cannabis were seized at the Port of Halifax
Canadian border agents found drugs in a container with wire baskets that was being shipped to the United Kingdom.
Canadian law enforcement seized a large shipment of cannabis that was being illegally smuggled out of the country through a port in Nova Scotia. The operation was the result of joint work between border services and federal police.
Discovery of Contraband at Seaport
On September 5th of this year, officers from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) conducted a routine inspection of a shipping container at the port of Halifax. The cargo was declared as wire mesh containers destined for the United Kingdom.
During the inspection, border officers with support from CBSA's intelligence unit discovered four wooden crates with suspicious contents. Inside was vacuum-sealed cannabis.
Scale of the Seizure
The total amount of confiscated drugs was:
- 1,479 packages of dried cannabis
- Total weight: 801.5 kilograms
All seized materials and evidence were handed over to the RCMP's Atlantic Region Federal Policing unit in Nova Scotia for further investigation.
Legal Consequences
Law enforcement officials remind that despite cannabis being legal in Canada, illegally moving it across the border remains a serious criminal offense. Offenders can face up to 5 years in prison under the Customs Act or up to 14 years under the Cannabis Act.
Law enforcement emphasizes that cannabis smuggling fuels organized crime and finances other illegal activities, including drug and weapons trafficking.
