Halloween in Canada: how they celebrate the scariest and most fun night of the year
From school parades to haunted houses and glowing pumpkin displays across the country.
Halloween in Canada is one of the most anticipated fall holidays. Already in early October, streets gradually transform into horror movie sets: tombstones, witches, spider webs, and dozens of glowing pumpkins appear on lawns. Stores are filled with masks, costumes, and piles of candy.
Traditions and Holiday Atmosphere
October 31st is a special day. In the evening, children put on their costumes and go door-to-door for treats, shouting the cheerful "Trick or treat!" The streets turn into a carnival procession: princesses, superheroes, dinosaurs, and ghosts. Parents walk alongside with flashlights, while neighbors prepare mountains of candy in advance – because you can't say no.
Halloween at Schools
Schools have a truly magical atmosphere. In elementary and middle schools, everyone comes in costume: students, teachers, and even the principal. They organize parades and dance parties, costume contests, photo zones, and themed treats. On this day, studying takes a bit of a back seat – but everyone's smiling and enjoying the celebration.
In high schools, things are a bit more grown-up but no less fun. Everyone still dresses up, just with more style and creativity. For example, in French class you might see a chef from "Ratatouille," while chemistry is taught by the real Jon Snow. In the hallway, you can easily run into the vice principal dressed as a character from "Peaky Blinders." And no one's surprised – because it's Halloween.
Evening Celebrations
In the evening, the whole country comes out to celebrate. In Toronto and the suburbs, they host parades, parties, and scary-fun attractions. One of the most famous places is Canada's Wonderland. Every October, the park transforms into a real Halloween Haunt: dozens of actors in makeup, "living" zombies, fog, themed horror zones, nighttime rides, and light shows. People come here not only from Ontario, but also from neighboring provinces. For kids, there's a separate version – Camp Spooky, where everything is friendly: no scares, just fun and candy.
Home Haunts and Enthusiasts
Many Canadians prepare for Halloween all year long. There are real enthusiasts who turn their homes into Haunted Houses – with special effects, actors, and decorations as good as any theme park. Online, people post special maps of haunted houses – by neighborhood and city, so you can plan your route and visit the most impressive addresses.
Celebrations in Different Provinces
In British Columbia, one of the brightest events is the Vancouver Halloween Parade & Expo – a large-scale celebration combining a parade, cosplay, exhibition, and parties. On the opposite coast, in Nova Scotia, the town of Shelburne hosts the Jack-o' Lantern Festival – residents carve and display pumpkins with artistic designs along the waterfront, creating an entire alley of glowing lanterns.
In Quebec, Halloween is celebrated with French charm – more theatrical performances, vintage costumes, and street shows. And in British Columbia, the holiday ends with fireworks – yes, they actually set them off for Halloween here.
