From Moscow to Vancouver: Immigration Experience Through Education

Real-life experience of immigrating to Canada: Challenges of adapof adapting, finding housing and work, and the unique aspects of studying and living in a new country.

Anna and Alexander moved from Moscow to Vancouver over a year ago on a student program. Anna enrolled in an MBA program at University Canada West, while Alexander received an open work permit as a student's spouse. Their experience adapting to life in Canada includes both positive aspects and real challenges faced by new immigrants.

Path to Immigration Through Education

Initially, the couple considered federal immigration programs and created a profile in Express Entry, but their points were insufficient for an invitation. They then decided to pursue immigration through education. Anna was chosen because of her stronger English skills, necessary for the language exam.

Applying for the MBA program required gathering numerous documents, taking language exams (Anna took DuoLingo, and later IELTS Academic), providing work references, and describing work experience. Anna had worked for seven years as a systems analyst in the IT department of MTS Bank, specializing in customer relationship management systems.

The visa process took exactly two months. The family initially planned to start studies in December, but due to approaching holidays and no visa response, they postponed to the spring semester. As soon as the study start was moved, the visa was approved the very next day.

Preparing for the Move

By the time of the move, the family was fully prepared. They had researched all necessary websites for job and housing searches, and learned about the first steps upon arrival in Canada: how to obtain a SIN (Social Insurance Number), medical card, and other documents. All information was found online.

They booked temporary accommodation through Airbnb for three weeks, as it's common in Canada to move into rental properties on the first of the month. During this time, they managed to complete all paperwork and find permanent housing with the help of a Russian-speaking realtor.

Housing and Cost of Living

The family lives in New Westminster, considered a good middle-ground option — close to downtown but not on the outskirts. The cost of a one-bedroom apartment (with a separate bedroom, large living room combined with a kitchen, and a balcony) ranges from $2,200 to $2,500 per month, but can be higher depending on the specific property.

When choosing an area, it's important to consider the characteristics of different parts of Vancouver. Richmond is predominantly populated by the Asian diaspora, while Surrey has a large Indian community. Surrey is not recommended due to high crime rates. Good options include Burnaby, New Westminster, and Coquitlam, which is closer to mountains and nature.

About half of the family budget goes to rent, with the other half covering all other expenses: phone, internet, gas, food, and entertainment.

Education at University Canada West

The university operates on a trimester system. Each trimester lasts three months, during which students study three subjects. Final grades are given at the end of the trimester, followed by a one-week break before the next semester begins.

Students can create their own schedules, choosing any day of the week and convenient time for classes. It's possible to concentrate all three courses on one day, meaning attending university only once a week. Additional online classes are offered but aren't always mandatory.

The workload includes written assignments, tests, individual projects, and group tasks. Group projects require coordination with classmates and often become challenging due to the need to align actions of five team members.

University Canada West offers scholarships to students. The family received a grant of over $9,000, reducing tuition from $40,000 to $30,000. To maintain the scholarship, students must keep an average CGPA of at least 3.0. The grading system is letter-based: a B grade corresponds to 3.0 CGPA points, an A grade to 3.67 points.

An interesting aspect of the learning process is the active use of ChatGPT. Professors not only allow but encourage the use of AI as an assistant for generating ideas, emphasizing the importance of maintaining students' creative thinking.

Employment and Work

Alexander began job hunting before moving to Canada. He found work through connections — his wife's colleague provided a contact in Vancouver. After a phone conversation, the employer invited Alexander for an in-person meeting.

His first job was in furniture manufacturing for a large construction company that builds residential areas and community centers in British Columbia. The interview was conducted in Russian, with the applicant only needing to confirm experience with various machines.

After a year, Alexander changed jobs, nearly doubling his hourly rate. He found the new position through Indeed and LinkedIn. Changing employers proved more effective for increasing earnings than waiting for a raise at the previous job.

Special licenses aren't required for general construction work. However, specialized professions like electricians or plumbers need appropriate licenses, which significantly increase pay rates.

Anna also had a three-month experience working at a Safeway grocery store in the fruit cutting department, with a minimum hourly rate of just over $17. However, the part-time job interfered with her studies and risked her scholarship, so she decided to focus on education.

Transportation and Driver's License

In the first weeks, the family bought a used 2005 Toyota for $3,500 from a dealership. The car was fully serviced and only required oil changes during the year of use. Buying a car was necessary as commuting by public transport took over an hour and a half.

To get a driver's license, Alexander took a few lessons with a Russian-speaking instructor, studied theory using a mobile app, and successfully passed the exams. The theoretical test can be taken in Russian. The main issue is long queues for the practical exam due to a shortage of examiners. Byings for September were already closed.

Students can drive with Russian licenses for a year, workers only for three months.

Medical Services

Medical insurance in British Columbia is provided free of charge after three months of residence. Students additionally pay $75 per month for university insurance in the first three months before receiving provincial coverage.

Some employers offer additional benefits, including dental care. However, coverage is usually limited to teeth cleaning and a few fillings. Dental services are expensive — one filling can cost $500, of which $100 is paid by the patient with insurance.

From May 29, Canada planned to introduce a government dental care program for families with incomes below $90,000 per year, which should provide free dental treatment.

Climate and Nature

Winter in Vancouver is more like autumn with occasional snowfall. Temperatures hover around 7-10°C (45-50°F), with frequent rain. Snow is rare and light. If more than three centimeters (about an inch) of snow falls, it's considered a crisis — schools and daycares close.

Spring is incredibly beautiful. Various types of trees bloom: first one type of cherry, then sakura, then others. Whole streets are lined with pink flowering trees. The grass stays green year-round.

British Columbia offers diverse outdoor recreation opportunities. You can reach the mountains in 30-40 minutes by car, or the ocean in 25 minutes in the other direction. Popular activities include hiking, visiting Harrison Hot Springs, and enjoying various viewpoints.

Social Support

Canada provides various types of social support to residents. Low-income families can visit food banks, which offer free food like eggs, meat, sausage, fruit, and prepared meals. Some food banks operate through churches, while others are independent organizations.

The government also provides financial assistance to working but low-income families. Tax refunds are possible, which can amount to a sum comparable to a monthly salary.

Adaptation Challenges

The main difficulty was the language barrier. Despite a year of study at a Canadian university, Anya's conversational English didn't improve significantly, as confirmed by her IELTS speaking score of 6. The problem is compounded by the variety of accents in the multicultural environment.

Alexander notes the importance of working in an English-speaking company to overcome the language barrier. A year of working with Russian-speaking colleagues didn't help improve his English.

Negative aspects of life in Vancouver include homelessness and drug addiction, particularly noticeable on Hastings Street. The proximity to wildlife also raises concerns, such as the possibility of encountering bears while hiking in the mountains.

Comparison with Life in Russia

The family believes Moscow surpasses Vancouver in services and medical care. Canada wins in terms of safety, friendliness of people, quality of public transport, and proximity to nature.

The main advantages of Canada are safety, freedom, and beautiful nature. The disadvantages include the quality of healthcare, frequent changes in immigration programs, and high cost of living.

Work in Canada is primarily based on hourly pay, offering more opportunities to increase income through overtime. Overtime is paid at 1.5 or 2 times the regular rate. Workers feel more protected due to government support.

Conclusion

The family's experience shows that immigration to Canada through education can be successful with careful preparation. Key success factors were advance planning, job searching before arrival, and readiness to adapt to new conditions. Despite certain challenges, the family considers their decision to move as the right one and plans to obtain permanent resident status.

If you're considering immigrating to Canada, professional help can significantly simplify the process and increase your chances of success. To get a personal consultation and assessment of your immigration prospects, it's recommended to book a consultation with Canadian immigration specialists.
