What's open and closed on Canada Day

What

Helpful information about services and organizations operating during the July 1st holiday.

As Canada Day approaches on July 1, 2025, residents are advised to familiarize themselves with the operating hours of various services and institutions during this federal holiday. Many government and private organizations will either modify their working hours or remain closed.

Government Offices and Postal Services

All federal and provincial government offices, including Service Canada locations and passport offices, will be closed. Canada Post will also suspend its operations for the day, meaning no mail delivery and closed post offices nationwide.

Retail and Entertainment

Store and shopping mall hours will vary by region. Some major shopping centers, such as the Eaton Centre and Square One in the GTA, plan to operate on holiday schedules. However, others, including Yorkdale and Sherway Gardens, will be closed. Cineplex and Landmark movie theaters will remain open, offering full screening schedules.

Transportation and City Services

Public transit will run on holiday schedules with possible route reductions. For example, in Manitoba, Winnipeg's transit system will operate on an enhanced Sunday schedule. City services present a mixed picture: libraries will be closed, but outdoor public facilities like parks and pools are expected to remain accessible.

Financial Institutions and Grocery Stores

Bank branches across the country will be closed, although online banking will remain available. Grocery store operations will depend on specific locations. Some smaller chains, such as Rabba Fine Foods and T&T Supermarket, may stay open, while most major chains, including Loblaws and Metro, will be closed or operate on reduced hours.

Canadians are advised to check the operating hours of the establishments they're interested in ahead of time and plan their day accordingly. Additional information can be found on the official websites of Canada.ca, Canada Post, and municipal portals.
