Why Algonquin College is your path to a successful career in Canada

Discover Algonquin College: top-notch education in Canada's capital with the option to enroll without taking a language test.

One of the most reliable ways to immigrate to Canada is by pursuing higher education. Studying at a university allows you to gain valuable knowledge about in-demand professions and experience living in the country. After graduation, students receive a work permit in Canada. As a result, graduates have education and work experience that are in high demand, giving them an advantage over other permanent residence applicants.

Higher education in Canada has many benefits. It meets international standards, with Canadian universities ranking among the world's best institutions. Additionally, the cost of studying and living in Canada is significantly lower than in countries like the US and UK. It's never too late to start higher education in Canada, as it's accessible to people of all ages. Many Canadian colleges also allow enrollment without taking a language proficiency test.

Algonquin College

Algonquin College is a large public college located in Canada's capital city, Ottawa, in the province of Ontario. Founded in 1967 during the formation of Ontario's higher education system, it was named after the indigenous tribe that originally inhabited the area.

Algonquin College is a modern, government-accredited institution. In 2022, it ranked among the top 50 research colleges in Canada. The college focuses primarily on technology and arts. It consists of three campuses: one in Ottawa and two others in Perth and Pembroke, located 83 and 119 km from the capital, respectively.

Algonquin College has 20,000 full-time students, making it one of the largest colleges in Canada. It also has a significant international student population, with over 4,000 students from more than 130 countries, representing about 20% of the total full-time student body.

Programs

As mentioned, the college specializes in arts and technology. Algonquin College's mission is to "turn dreams into reality." In more practical terms, their goal is to prepare professionals who will become valuable assets in the job market upon graduation. The key feature of their education is a strong emphasis on applied theory and practical experience. Students gain maximum hands-on experience and practical knowledge, enabling them to find work immediately after graduation and feel comfortable in their workplace with all the necessary skills.

Algonquin College offers over 300 programs, including bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as one— and two-year diploma and certificate programs. The main areas of study include:

Each of these fields offers dozens of study programs. All programs focus on practical skills, teamwork, and professional development. More than 50 of Algonquin College's programs include co-op placements. This means students participate in paid professional internships at workplaces. It's an excellent option for many reasons. Cost of Education and Living

To give you a clearer picture of how much an international student would need for a year of study, we've prepared a table.

Tuition and Study Materials Costs
Tuition (including health insurance, transit pass, gym and recreation access, and academic material fees) $16,200 — $22,000 CAD
Textbooks and supplies $200 — $1,000 CAD
Other Expenses
Miscellaneous living expenses (clothing, etc.) $1,950 CAD
Accommodation
Homestay with three meals per day $1,220 CAD per month
On-campus residence with meal plan $12,256 CAD for 8 months
Two-bedroom apartment rental (excluding meals) $1,200 — $1,500 CAD per month

These prices might seem high, but it's important to understand that, firstly, the cost of education at Algonquin College is in line with the average tuition at major Canadian colleges. Secondly, it's still much more affordable than education in other English-speaking countries.

Also, international students in Canada are allowed to work up to 24 hours per week while studying. Considering that the minimum wage for students in Ontario is $14.60 CAD per hour, a student working a few hours a day can cover part of their education expenses. And don't forget about the paid internship programs we mentioned earlier.

Why Choose Algonquin College?

The best way to answer this question is with numbers. As mentioned before, Algonquin College's main goal is to provide students with a profession and ensure their employment. The college is successful in this endeavor. Each year, approximately 6,000 students graduate. 90% of them find work within 6 months of graduation, and 92% of employers hiring Algonquin College graduates are satisfied with the quality of knowledge of their new employees. 96% of graduates were satisfied with their education and would recommend the college to others.

Another advantage of Algonquin College is its location: few colleges offer international students the opportunity to experience life in or near a vibrant world capital at such a reasonable price. Additionally, thanks to the large number of students from different countries, the institution has a multicultural atmosphere.

Admission Requirements

The admission process for international students at Algonquin College is similar to other higher education institutions in Canada.

The college offers Post-Secondary programs for high school graduates and Post-Graduate programs for those who already have a higher education degree. For the former, a high school diploma is required, while for the latter, a higher education diploma is needed.

Proof of English language proficiency is mandatory. Depending on the program, an IELTS Academic test score of 6.0-6.5 is required. We'll discuss admission without a language test or with weak English skills later.

It's worth noting that Algonquin College doesn't require entrance exams, which may be a relief for many applicants.

How to Apply Without English Proficiency?

Since all classes at Algonquin College are conducted in English, students must have a sufficient level of language proficiency to understand academic material.

If your English is weak or taking a language test is stressful for you, there's an alternative option. You can apply without proving your language level. In this case, the college issues a conditional acceptance letter, which you can use to apply for a student visa. You'll just need to prove your language skills before starting your studies.

While your documents are being reviewed, we suggest enrolling in an online English course at ILAC, a Canadian language school partnered with Algonquin College. The school has a special University Pathway program to prepare students for higher education. Once you reach the required language level and receive a certificate from the school, it will be sufficient for admission without taking the IELTS.
