Vancouver program helps newcomer women find tech jobs

Free employment assistance to female Vancouver newcomers.

The YWCA Metro Vancouver is a non-profit organization in Vancouver that promotes women's economic well-being.

The organization has a free 10-week Tech Connect program designed for women with experience in IT. The program includes lectures on Canadian corporate culture, employment coaching, tech networking events and more. Approximately 200 women have participated in the program over the past four years.

To qualify for the program, a potential participant must:

  • have work experience in IT;
  • have permanent residency / be a professional caregiver with a work permit / have refugee status;
  • live in British Columbia and have a work permit;
  • have an Intermediate level of English or above.

Currently there is a pay gap between immigrants and locals (about CAD 5,70 per hour) in Canadian IT industry. Also, there are 4 times more men than women in the industry. Over the next two years, YWCA will receive CAD 1,1 million from the government, which is considered an important stepping stone towards overcoming gender and racial discrimination.

Ukrainian women who came to Canada through the CUAET program can also participate in the program. Registration for the program will open on May 15, 2023.
