Canadians and immigrants no longer want to live in Ontario

Why are people leaving this province?

Statistics Canada has released new data on interprovincial migration for the second quarter of 2022. A total of 146,097 people moved from one region of Canada to another in the second quarter.

The largest outflow of people was recorded in the province of Ontario — more than 49,000 people left it. Ontario has always been a very popular region to which both Canadians and immigrants were moving. The capital of Canada, Ottawa, and the largest city in the country, Toronto, are located there. So this loss of population came as a surprise. Moreover, it is the largest quarterly outflow of population from Ontario since 1971.

Which province do people prefer now? Alberta has the highest rate, with 37,000 people having moved there. Perhaps it is thanks to the local government, as the province has already twice launched an advertising campaign to attract skilled workers from other regions, primarily Ontario and British Columbia.

Alberta attracts people with lower costs of living, good wages, and career opportunities. Because of its popularity, Ontario has become one of the most expensive regions in Canada, especially it is about Toronto.

Across the provinces of Canada, the migration figures for the second quarter are as follows:
