The lowest unemployment rate in Canadian history

And the largest number of open positions.

For the third month, Canada's unemployment rate is breaking records, falling by a tenth of a percent. In May, it reached 5.1 percent. That's really low: In 2020, the unemployment rate was 9.5 percent. If you compare it to other countries around the world, even with 9.5% unemployment, Canada was 51st.

Total employment increased by 40,000, while the number of people working full-time increased by 135,000, that is, people moved from part-time to full-time. Most of the jobs were held by women. The number of women 25 to 54 years old in full-time employment increased by 63,000 over the month.

People are earning more, although wages are not catching up with inflation. The average hourly wage in May increased 3.9 percent from last May and is now $31.12 CAD. The difference between April's 2022 and 2021 average wage was 3.3%.

In the first quarter of 2022, the number of vacancies reached 957,500, the highest quarterly figure in the history of observation. At the same time, there are 409,000 potential workers in Canada — people who want to work, but for some reason are not employed.

The results of an online survey on the job portal Indeed showed that 77% of Canadian employers agree to hire people without experience and special education. The main thing is that applicants should be active, sociable, attentive and willing to learn.

Where are the specialists needed the most?

The most critical situation is in medicine. Hospitals in some provinces are already hiring retired nurses on a temporary basis.

Unfortunately, right after arriving, it is very difficult for foreigners with a medical degree to get a job as anything other than a nurse. You have to prove your qualifications. Every province does this differently, and almost all provinces are trying to simplify and speed up the process. But they have only started to invest in simplification in recent months, so we have not yet seen any results.

  • The number of vacancies for nurses, nurses and patient care assistants has increased 84.2 percent since the first quarter of 2020, with 21,900 openings.
  • The number of vacancies for diploma nurses and registered psychiatric nurses increased 77.8 percent to 22,900.
  • The number of vacancies for licensed practical nurses increased 166.0% to 11,300.

The construction industry counted 81,500 vacancies in the first quarter, up 7.1% (5,400 vacancies) from the fourth quarter of 2021. In the first quarter of 2020, there were only 38,800 job openings in the field. The biggest demand is for workers — up 97% in two years, with 8,800 new openings — and plotters — needed 149.1% more, with 6,600 new openings.

The number of vacancies in the hospitality and food service industries dropped 12.2% from the fourth quarter of 2022, to 133,800. But compared to the first quarter of 2020, the number of vacancies is up 88.0% to 62,600 new positions. Cafes, restaurants and bars had the most job openings.

The number of vacancies in the manufacturing sector is growing — there is a shortage of 87,400 people. That's 5.3% (4,400 vacancies) more than in the fourth quarter of 2021, and 93.6% (42,300 vacancies) more than in the first quarter of 2020. Workers are especially needed in food manufacturing (6,800 new jobs) and finished metal products (6,100 new jobs).

The retail job openings are also plentiful, with 114,600, up 12.8% (13,000 vacancies) from the fourth quarter of 2021, and 68.5% (46,600 vacancies) from the first quarter of 2020. Particularly lacking are grocery store workers (10,300 new vacancies) and universal store workers (4,700 new vacancies).

Canada needs immigrants, but not everything is as rosy as it may seem at first glance. Some industries are in such short supply because they pay very little.

Statistics Canada took this factor into account as well, comparing what money people are willing to work for and what wages are offered to them.

  • In retail, the average salary is 22.4% less than what job seekers want.
  • In the areas of hospitality and catering — 15.8% less.
  • In the construction sector, 7% less.

But in healthcare, the real average wage is 8.9% higher than expected. But there really is a shortage of qualified personnel.

If you compare the provinces, the largest increase in vacancies since the fourth quarter of 2021 is noted:

  • in Newfoundland and Labrador — 12.6%;
  • in New Brunswick, 8.7%;
  • in Manitoba — 5.1%;
  • in Ontario, 3.1%.

But keep in mind that in Newfoundland and Labrador, there are 3.8 unemployed people for every job opening. Either narrow specialists are needed there, or these are jobs where no one wants to go.
