Ukraine asks Canada for a favour

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to support Kiev in its intention to join NATO. The leaders had a telephone conversation on Tuesday, 6 April. Zelenskyy believes that Ukraine's accession to the alliance would put an end to conflicts in Donbas.
The president noted that the cease-fire regime was constantly violated in Donbas, which resulted in casualties among the Ukrainian military, and the military threat from Russia was on the rise.
"As a special partner of Ukraine, Canada could lead the initiative among allies who support Ukraine's NATO membership action plan," Zelensky says. — Canada's support would be an important indicator of friendship between our countries.
Trudeau later revealed that he and Zelensky discussed their shared concerns about Russian military activity near Donbas. Trudeau said he supported Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and was committed to strengthening friendly relations between the countries.
Zelensky also invited Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Trudeau to the inauguration summit of the Crimean Platform, which will be held in Kiev on August 26, 2021, and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ukrainian independence.
