Record-breaking grant for Canada's top university

Record-breaking grant for Canada

Investment into high-tech laboratories development.

The University of Toronto, regularly ranked among the best universities in the world, will receive a record CAD 200 million grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). This is the largest federal investment Canadian universities have ever received.

The funds will be used to create 'self-driving labs'. These are laboratories that combine artificial intelligence with automated robotic platforms. Such device is able to discover new materials and molecules in a fraction of the usual time and cost.

Such laboratories are used in all fields of human activity, from the creation of life-saving drugs and biodegradable plastics to the production of low-carbon cement and renewable energy.

Among the ambitious projects is even the idea of developing a potential cure for cancer in just 30 days, but such processes take years or even decades.

“The University of Toronto is grateful for this significant investment in artificial intelligence-driven research and innovation, which promises to improve the lives of Canadians and those of people around the world,” said U of T President Meric Gertler.

The decision to fund University was made by the specially created Acceleration Consortium in 2021, which brings together about 100 researchers in the widest range of disciplines: artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, economics, robotics, engineering, biology, pharmacology and more.
