Province of Canada to begin registering foreign nurses

This will help them get started before they get their license.

The Ontario Nursing College has allowed foreign-educated nurses to be temporarily registered to work while they are obtaining their licenses.

The profession of nursing in Canada is licensed. This means that professionals have to prove their knowledge and experience and, in some cases, undergo additional training, which makes the process time-consuming.

The Ontario government hopes the new measures will help thousands of nurses fill healthcare jobs. There are an estimated 5,970 foreign nurses in the province right now who are in the process of being licensed and could potentially now start working.

Recently, Ontario has had to close emergency departments for hours and even days because of a shortage of healthcare workers. Hospitals have also reported that emergency patients have to wait for a long time.

The temporary foreign nurse registration rules were approved by the government on October 27 and went into effect immediately. In addition, the Ontario Nursing College will allow retired and non-practicing nurses to return to work.
