$38,000 CAD for attempted suicide in Canada

Why you shouldn't get desperate in a foreign country.

Ella, 22, from Nigeria, was a student at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. On December 29, 2020, tired of her self-isolation and academic problems, Ella attempted suicide, after which she called the police and had them take her to the hospital.

Having stabilized Ella's condition, the doctors discharged her nine days later. Perhaps, such a long stay in the hospital was connected with the New Year holidays — on January 1, 2021 Ella wrote a complaint to the higher authority, but it was considered on January 6. Only then the girl was released.

Already in February, Ella was billed $5,322 CAD for each night she spent in the hospital and an additional $1,077 CAD for a stay in the emergency room. By comparison, a woman with expired health insurance in Alberta had to pay about $7,000 CAD for an operation to remove her inflamed appendix.

Until the end of November 2021, when Ella was not confirmed as a resident, she was worried that she would be deported from the country because of her huge debt. Now she is suing the Manitoba health care system and trying to raise the necessary amount of money through the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe. Within a week, she has raised $3,700 CAD.
