Important reminder from Canada Border Services

Important reminder from Canada Border Services

A number of new measures for those who have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus will come into effect from 5 July.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reminds: starting July 5, 2021 at 00:01 a.m. EST fully vaccinated travellers who arrive by land or air are not required to be quarantined or tested for coronavirus on days 1 and 8 upon arrival. They must, however, have the right to enter Canada.

For fully vaccinated travelers arriving by air, the requirement to stay in government-authorized quarantine hotels (GAAs) pending the results of the test done upon arrival is waived.

It is important to note that these measures do not apply to travelers arriving in the country before 00:01 hours on July 5.

Who is eligible to enter Canada?

This category includes: Canadian citizens, permanent residents and persons registered under the Indian Act, and foreign nationals who are eligible under the following regulations: Ban on entry to Canada from the United States; Ban on entry to Canada from any country other than the United States.

To take advantage of the new public health measures, travelers must:

1. have the right to enter Canada.

2. Be fully vaccinated with a series of 2 vaccines approved by the Government of Canada at least 14 days before entering the country. As a reminder, vaccines produced by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) are approved in Canada.

3. Register your health information in ArriveCAN (via smartphone app or web portal): provide proof of a valid molecular test for COVID-19 before boarding the plane or upon arrival at the land border, and provide mandatory information, including digital proof of vaccination in English or French. This must be done before you arrive at the border.

It is important to note that on July 5 at 00:01 hours ArriveCAN is releasing an updated version of the software to be used in the future. It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and the App Store for the iPhone. If travelers cannot enter the required information themselves, they will have to ask a friend or a family member for help.

All other restrictions remain in force

There is no change for travellers who have not been fully vaccinated. They are still subject to a mandatory 3-day stay in quarantine hotels (a requirement valid for those arriving by air). Other arrivals are subject to a 14-day quarantine.

It is also important for them to take the mandatory COVID-19 infection test (before arrival, on arrival/1st and 8th days).

It is also a requirement that they submit their personal test and vaccination information to ArriveCAN before they arrive in Canada.

Tourism to Canada is still banned

Foreign nationals are still banned from entering the country for tourism, recreation or entertainment purposes — all travellers attempting to cross the border into Canada for these reasons will be refused.

It should be noted that the United States has also extended restrictions on non-essential travel across its land borders and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico until 21 July. However, these borders are already open for major trade and tourist travel.

Border delays

Those arriving in Canada may face delays when crossing the border because of enhanced public health measures. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) warns it cannot jeopardize the health and safety of Canadians because of border waiting times and thanks travellers for their patience.
