US pledges to help Canada with vaccines

The states want to share extra doses with their neighbors.

United States President Joe Biden said he plans to send surplus COVID-19 vaccines to other countries, including Canada. The states had previously promised Canada 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines, which they do not use.

Biden had a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about sending vaccines to Canada. The president also anticipates that the United States will be able to help Central American countries as well. The U.S. has now reached the 200 million-dose vaccine mark.

"We've already helped Canada a little bit, and we're going to try to help some more," Biden said.

The president also called Trudeau "a guy who works hard to take care of his country." For now, however, sending vaccines to Canada is only being considered because there aren't enough drugs in the States to share right now, even though the country has a stockpile of vaccines that aren't being used.
